I’ve always been fascinated by the Bonsai Garden in the Singapore Botanic Gardens, which this drawing illustrates. It reflects on the way we view and experience nature, especially in an urban environment. Bonsai is the art of dwarfing and sculpting trees into aesthetically appealing shapes – simultaneously celebrating nature whilst attempting to control it. This mirrors botanical gardens themselves, which provide a connection to plant life but remain a constructed version of nature.
