While drawing at Ubud Water Palace, I noticed many tourists trying not to get anyone else in their photos. The need to look or feel like the only one in the place – that this is a unique experience – interests me because it seems at odds with visiting places pre-determined for tourist consumption. As a response, I included scenes that I hope other tourists might avoid – temple staff making repairs or fishing rubbish out of the ponds. However, I wonder how much of it still consists of imagery that I have been conditioned to look out for, through preconceptions of what Bali is.
